Palace of the Grand Master
Who we are
A rectangular building arranged around a central courtyard, the Palace of the Grand Master is built at the north-western point of the Medieval City, as a key part of the medieval fortifications. It is believed to have occupied the site where the Byzantine acropolis previously stood and began to be built immediately after the establishment of the Knights on Rhodes, that is, at the beginning of the 14th century. Its main entrance is on the south side and leads to a rectangular, central, open-air courtyard. The ground floor of the building houses two permanent exhibitions on the ancient and medieval city of Rhodes, while on the upper floor one can observe, within the halls restored by the Italians, the objects and mosaic floors with which the space was adorned in the fourth decade of the 20th century. The arrangement of the "Italian" intervention included the transfer (mainly from Kos) and installation in the palace halls of notable Late Hellenistic floor mosaics.
